Road PATROL
The Patrol Division is the most visible and widely recognized unit of the Sheriff’s Office, led by Captain Erik Tamol. Each shift is typically staffed by a Sergeant and at least one Deputy assigned to both the East and West Zones, with each Deputy responsible for coverage across eight towns. Depending on scheduling, there may be a fourth Deputy on the shift who will cover busy zones or serve as back up to required calls such as domestic incidents, warrants or other serious complaints.
In addition to their core responsibilities—such as responding to complaints, enforcing traffic laws, transporting inmates, and providing security at events—Deputies also perform routine property checks and maintain an active presence in local schools.
Many Deputies also serve in specialized roles, including assignments to the Crash Management Team, Drug Task Force, and as Drug Recognition Experts, Child Passenger Safety Technicians, Certified Police Instructors, Evidence Technicians, School Resource Officers, and Field Training Officers.
Every Deputy has completed Active Shooter Response Training at the State Preparedness Training Center and is certified in the administration of Naloxone, as well as AED and First Aid.
We are committed to maintaining a team of highly trained, versatile Deputies who serve our community with professionalism and respond promptly to a wide range of emergencies. Our Deputies have been first on scene in numerous critical incidents, including overdoses, serious or fatal crashes, armed robberies, homicides, fires, suicide attempts, mental health crises, serious assaults, and drug-related offenses.
Specialty units
Court Security Unit
The Wyoming County Sheriff’s Office contracts with the New York State Office of Court Administration to provide court security for all sessions held at the County Courthouse, including Criminal, Civil, Family, Domestic Violence, Treatment, Probate, Surrogate, Support, and Grand Jury courts. In addition to court security, Deputies handle a variety of tasks such as Volunteer Firefighter “arson checks,” processing lost pistol permits and license plates, and may be assigned to regular patrol duties during busy periods or when court is not in session.
County Building Security is a joint effort between the Wyoming County Sheriff’s Office and the Department of Social Services, which funds the position. The assigned Deputy conducts regular rounds and inspections at various county facilities to ensure the safety and security of both the public and county employees.
School Resource Officer Unit
With support from the Wyoming County Board of Supervisors, as well as the Attica and Letchworth School Districts, the Wyoming County Sheriff’s Office provides full-time School Resource Officers (SROs) at both districts. These SROs work to enhance school security, build positive relationships with students, collaborate with staff, and promote health and safety within the classrooms. They are trained in Active Shooter response and hold certifications as School Resource Officers and D.A.R.E. instructors.
Marine Unit
The Marine Unit, staffed by part-time deputies, collaborates with the New York State Police to provide patrol coverage on Silver Lake.
