Smoke Detectors
- Test your smoke detectors monthly by pressing and holding the button until it sounds to ensure they work properly.
- Change batteries every six months. Daylight Savings (March and November) is a good reminder.
- Place detectors on every level of your home, including inside and outside bedrooms, the basement, and the kitchen.

fire extinguishers
Fire extinguishers are available online and at most outdoor or home improvement stores. Call ahead to confirm the correct extinguisher is in stock for your needs. Look to the right to learn which extinguisher is right for your home and how to use it in an emergency.
Home Safety Plan
- Know two ways out of every room in case one exit is blocked. Upper level rooms may need an escape ladder.
- Practice getting low and moving to an exit in case of smoke.
- Choose a safe meeting place away from your home.
- Hold a home fire drill at least twice a year.
