Protective Services Programs

Adult protective services (aps)

Adult Protective Services (APS) is a mandated program administered by the Wyoming County Department of Social Services. APS is responsible for the intake, investigation, and assessment of reports involving abuse, neglect, and financial exploitation of impaired, vulnerable adults living in the community. For eligible individuals, APS caseworkers develop individualized service plans to address physical, sexual, or emotional abuse; neglect; financial exploitation; and other unmet essential needs.

APS serves adults age 18 and older who, due to physical or mental impairments:

  • Are unable to protect themselves from abuse, neglect, financial exploitation, or other forms of harm; and
  • Have no one available who is willing and able to provide responsible assistance.

Services may be provided directly by APS or through referral and can include:

  • Safety monitoring;
  • Coordination with health, mental health, aging, and other community service providers;
  • Assistance with accessing benefits;
  • Informal money management;
  • Appointment of a representative payee; and,
  • When necessary, petition the court for the appointment of a guardian or other legal intervention.

Child protective services (CPs)

The abuse or maltreatment of children is against the law. Effective child protective services are essential to prevent victims from suffering further harm.

The Child Protective Services Act of 1973 was enacted to encourage thorough reporting of child abuse and maltreatment. The law established child protective services (CPS) in every county in New York.

Wyoming County is responsible for investigating reports of child abuse and maltreatment, protecting children (anyone under 18) from further harm, and providing rehabilitative services to children, parents, and other family members involved.
