P.U.P.P.I.E.S.

PURPOSE

The Youth Bureau, in collaboration with Animals Friends of Wyoming County (AFWC), has created a meaningful connection between abandoned dogs and children in the community, enriching the lives of both. Through this initiative, children will read to shelter dogs—providing the animals with comfort and companionship—while also learning about responsible pet ownership and how to properly care for dogs. The program aims to foster empathy, compassion, and awareness of animal welfare.

How it helps

This program creates powerful benefits for both children and shelter dogs. For kids—especially those who struggle with reading aloud—reading to a calm, nonjudgmental animal helps build confidence and fluency. Studies show that even 10–15 minutes of reading to dogs each week can lead to measurable gains in reading skills. Many children report feeling “happy and safe” during these sessions, compared to feeling nervous when reading to adults or peers.

The experience also nurtures empathy and compassion. Children who engage with shelter animals and learn about their care are significantly less likely to mistreat animals later in life.

At the same time, shelter dogs benefit from gentle interaction. Reading sessions help reduce their anxiety and fear, making them more relaxed and emotionally balanced. Animal Control officers use these sessions to observe how dogs respond to children, offering valuable insights into each dog’s temperament. This helps create more accurate profiles for adopters—and increases the dogs’ chances of finding loving, permanent homes.

How it works

Interested parents or guardians can register their children either online or in person with the AFWC P.U.P.P.I.E.S. Program Coordinator. When a spot becomes available, the coordinator will contact the next eligible family to join an upcoming P.U.P.P.I.E.S. group session.

Sessions are held at the Wyoming County Animal Shelter and are scheduled based on participant interest and shelter availability. This program is completely free and open to all residents of Wyoming County.
